Frequently Asked Questions
Questions We Have
Been Asked.
We have been asked following questions by our previous customers and dealers.
1. What are LiFePO4 batteries?
LiFePO4 batteries are a type of rechargeable battery that have a number of advantages over other types of batteries. They are environmentally friendly because they do not contain lead or acid. They are also exceptionally durable and can last for up to 10,000 charge cycles. This makes them an excellent choice for use in electric vehicles and other applications where durability and longevity are important.
2. Why are they better for powersports?
There are many reasons that LiFePO4 batteries are better for powersports than lead acid batteries. For one, they are much lighter weight, which makes them easier to transport and install. They also have a much longer life span (cycle life), meaning they will not need to be replaced as often. Additionally, LiFePO4 batteries are less susceptible to damage from vibration, making them a better choice for vehicles that are used off-road or in other rugged conditions. Lithium Unlimited Co’s batteries are additionally padded inside for further shock and vibration resistance.
3. How do they compare to other types of batteries?
There are many different types of batteries available on the market, but how do LiFePO4 batteries compare to other types?
LiFePO4 batteries have a high energy density, meaning they can store a lot of energy in a small package. This makes them a good choice for extreme off the grid scenarios where you might want to charge a phone or run a spotlight as well as start your vehicle. Just ensure you don’t go too low in the charge. They also have a longer lifespan, meaning they can be used for multiple charges and more seasons.
Lithium can be sensitive to temperature extremes. Our cells are specifically designed to operate over a huge temperature range and overcome that. Our low-temperature batteries can operate at -35 degrees F when operated per the manual and can operate as high as 160 degrees F without damage or issues.
Other types of lithium can be dangerous if punctured. LiFePO4 is a much safer technology and will not catch fire under the vast majority of circumstances. Our batteries are additionally protected by a specially designed Battery Management System, BMS for short, which greatly increases safety.
Yes! LiFePO4 is the perfect replacement for nearly any lead acid battery in automotive, powersports, marine, or deep cycle application.
If you own a powersports vehicle, then you know that it’s important to keep your battery charged. But what do you do if your battery dies while you’re out on the road? In this article, we’ll show you how to charge lithium batteries in powersports vehicles.
1. How to charge lithium batteries in powersports vehicles
When you are charging your lithium batteries in your powersports vehicle, there are a few things you need to keep in mind. Make sure that you are using a charger that is specifically designed for lithium battery as well as it’s specific voltage. Ensure to read the instructions that come with your charger. Charging lithium batteries improperly can damage them and may even cause failure with the cells or onboard BMS. Follow the instructions carefully to ensure that your batteries are properly charged.
It is also important to keep your batteries cool while they are charging. Charging them in a hot environment can damage them and reduce cell life. Be sure to place your batteries in a well-ventilated area while they are charging.
2. Tips for avoiding damage to lithium batteries
There are a few things that you can do to help avoid damage to your LiFePO4 batteries:
- Don’t overcharge them
- Don’t store them in an extremely hot or cold environment
- When storing the battery, leave it between 60-80% capacity
- Don’t drop them – this can damage the battery
- Don’t expose them to water (Our batteries are fine for the trail and in wet conditions, it’s best to avoid submersing them though as they could shock you like any other battery!)
- Use the correct charger – your old car battery charger won’t do the job
4. Charging lithium batteries for the first time
When you receive your new lithium battery, there are a few things you need to do before you can use it. The first thing is to charge it. Batteries are shipped at a low charge percentage to reduce potential dangers in transit.
To charge the battery, please connect a charger designed for LiFePO4 batteries in the appropriate voltage. Normal 12v LiFePO4 batteries will be a “4S” configuration.
It is important not to overcharge the battery. Overcharging can damage the battery and shorten its life. A charger designed for LiFePO4 should not have issues with this, but we additionally have safety built in with the onboard BMS that should cut off charging if needed.
5. Charging lithium batteries in cold weather
Winter is coming, and with it comes the cold weather. When the temperature dips below freezing, it’s important to take extra precautions when charging lithium batteries. In extreme cold weather, the chemistry in the cells might not be able to perform correctly. Charging or discharging could hurt the battery. Be sure to consult your manual for the temperature range your battery can be used before charging and discharging.
6. Charging lithium batteries in hot weather
Do not charge lithium batteries in extremely hot weather. Charging lithium batteries in hot weather can cause them to overheat and damage the cells. Always ensure your battery has ample ventilation when charging.
To sum it up, LiFePO4 batteries can be a great addition to reduce weight and increase capability in your powersports machine. They are a direct replacement for lead acid. Just ensure you read the manual and understand a few of the minor differences associated with it.
